LA PLATA: A LEGENDARY BAR THAT NEVER CHANGES A THING

La Plata has been a Barcelona staple since 1945. The founders, a married couple Joaquima Planas and Josep Marjanet, wanted to give honest food to the industrious people of the then very working-class Barri Gòtic. The star of the bar was fish – little battered and deep-fried sardines, cooked in the style of Southern Spain; los pescaítos fritos.

Today it is a rowdy place, beloved by both simple workers of Barcelona and the culinary titans.

FOOD

The menu is the most curious thing about this bar: they do exactly five things. These things are: los pescaítos fritos (little deep-fried fish, heads and all), tomato salad with onion and olives, Cantabrian anchovies, white pork sausage butifarra and, finally, pan con tomate (bread smothered with tomato and olive oil, traditionally Catalan).

In over 75 years of La Plata’s existence there has been just one change – the pork sausage joined the fish somewhere in the 1980s. Until very recently the bar didn’t even have a menu, as the regulars knew what they could buy. Right now – a concession to the international crowds – La Plata sports a blackboard with its laconic offers.

DRINKS

In La Plata you can have three types of wine: red, white, and rosé. They are bought from a friendly winery in the Penedés wine region and served to customers in labelless bottles. If so desired, you can also get them in a traditional Catalan porrón – a vessel with a long nose that Salvador Dalí liked to use to spice up his parties. Drinking from a porrón without spilling the wine all over oneself is a skill!

PRO TIP

La Plata is the best place to go after a long and tiring day at work: here, finally, you don’t have to make any decisions. You can sit down and say: “Just get me everything you have and some wine!”

HEDOLIST APP & GASTRONOMY WALKS

I love wine, especially the sparkling Catalan cava, I love cuisine both high and low and, most importantly, I love to have a good time!

To share that joy, I lead several walks around Barcelona focused on food and wine. To learn more, go to the “Walks” section.

Additionally, since 2022 I share tips (and addresses!) on the new savvy gastro app Hedolist as one of the Barcelona insiders. The idea of Hedolist is to base food recommendations around people. There are no ratings, rankings, stars or chef's hats - just food professionals and enthusiasts, sharing their

favourite places around the world.

To give you a taste, here are my Barcelona top-5; if you want more - download the app!
